The Breaks – Stream of Consciousness Saturday #SoCS

socs-badge-2015

“What!”  Tony slammed on the brakes, bringing the car to a sudden stop. Tires squealed behind him, a horn beeped, and voices called to him angrily, but he ignored them, his attention only on his passenger. “For real?”

Sam just nodded as he stared at his hands, folded in his lap, a deep frown on his face.

“I can’t believe it,” Tony said. “You and Julie were so good together. What happened?”
Sam shrugged. “I don’t know, man. I just don’t know. She just suddenly broke things off.”

“Have you tried to talk to her?”

“Yeah. She won’t answer my calls.”

Tony gave his head a small shake, then got the car moving again. “I’m sorry, man,” he said as they continued down the road. “Really. But that’s the breaks, I guess. Look, maybe you need to just take a break from dating, and just have some fun being single for a while.”

Sam stared down at his folded hands for a moment before replying, “Maybe you’re right.”

Tony nodded. “Right. Look, how about we go get something to drink. These errands can wait for later.”

“Ok.”

Tony stopped outside the closest pub. Once they were inside, the two went up to the bar and ordered a couple of beers. With beers in hand, they headed for an empty table in the back, but along the way Sam spotted a pretty brunette near the jukebox and made a beeline for her. Tony shook his head and continued on towards the table, muttering, “Here we go again. I hope he catches a break soon. I could sure use a break.”
