Gorge – Tuesday Use It In A Sentence #tuesdayuseitinasentence

As they hiked through the mountains, Art and Lance came upon a rickety old wooden bridge spanning a gorge. Lance eyed it warily for a moment then started to cross it, but Art just stood staring at it expectantly and muttering to himself.

“Come on already, Art!” Lance called.

“I can’t!”

“Why not? Afraid of heights?”

“No. I don’t know the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow!”

Lance sighed. “Of all the…Art, this isn’t the Gorge of Eternal Peril or the Bridge of Death! There’s no Bridgekeeper to worry about! Now come on, you Monty Python nut! It’s getting late!”

Lance crossed the bridge and the gorge safely and Art followed, albeit a bit more hesitantly.

A Different Drum – Stream of Consciousness Saturday #SoCS

socsbadge2016-17

It was a warm sunny day in March, and Alice and her friend Diana stood out on the deck and watched Alice’s daughter, Marianna as she sat at the little picnic table in the backyard, pretending to be having a tea party. She wore her father’s old top hat and she had plush toy animals sitting around the table at the various place settings, with a large plush rabbit sitting next to her in the seat of honor.

They heard Marianna introduce the rabbit as the March Hare, then saw Marianna look at her watch and cry out “Move down! Move down!” The little girl got up and moved all the toy animals over one seat.

“What is she doing?” Diana asked.

“She’s playing Alice in Wonderland. She just loves that story, especially the part about the tea party.”

Marianna played tea party for a few more minutes, then suddenly got up and placed all the toys in a line across the yard. Then she picked up a stick and went to the front of the line. She began humming what sounded like a marching band tune, then started marching around like she was leading a parade. After a few minutes of that, she decided to go play in the flower bed and talk to the daffodils and other flowers as her heroine, Alice, had done in Wonderland.

Diana shook her head in amazement. “That girl of yours sure has quite an imagination.”

“Yes, she does,” said Alice. “She certainly seems to march to the beat of a different drum.”

They watched her for a few more minutes, then decided to go back inside and let her play for a while.

Almost – Stream of Consciousness Saturday #SoCS #poem #poetry

Reblogging this old poem I did in honor of #worldpoetryday

Jeanne Owens, author

socs-badge

I almost had it

I could feel it there

Tickling at my brain

Trying to get my attention

Trying to grow into something

And then came the darkness

And the burgeoning thought

The idea that had been forming

Was lost to Dreamland

Heat – Tuesday Use It In A Sentence #tuesdayuseitinasentence

Brian had said he wouldn’t do it, that he didn’t have the nerve to try it, but in the heat of the moment and having seen everyone else enjoying themselves, he surprised his friends and went up on the karaoke stage to belt out Bryan Adams’ song, Heat of the Night, to great applause from the large crowd.

Man – Stream of Consciousness Saturday #SoCS

socsbadge2016-17

“Man, this is the best, Ron!” said Tim, sitting back in his chair at the dining table and wiping his mouth. “I can’t believe you cooked all that!”

“Yeah,” said Mike. “That food was the bomb! Who knew you could cook like that, man!”

“Not only can you cook,” said Tim, “but you’re smart enough to have your own business, you can paint pictures that have been shown in the museum, and you have a beautiful wife, too. You are truly a man for all seasons.”

“A man among men.”

“A true man’s man.”

“Thanks, guys,” said Ron. “I really appreciate that. But you know what they say. ‘Behind every great man is a great woman.” He reached over to his wife, Elaine, who sat next to him and took her hand. “I owe it all to Elaine.”

Tim and Mike raised their glasses in a toast to Elaine, then went back to eating. As they ate, Elaine leaned over and whispered to Ron, “I don’t think they realize. Are you going to tell them?”

“That what I said meant you actually fixed the dinner and not me? Do you think I should? I mean, I did tell them, they just weren’t smart enough to catch it. Besides, when they tell the story, it’d be great word of mouth. ”

“A real man would tell them.”

“Am I real man?”

“In more ways than one,” she said with a glint in her eye. “Show me how you’re one now, and you can show me in another way later.”

Ron flashed her a brief grin then tapped his glass with his spoon to get Tim and Mike’s attention.

Tim and Mike took the news fairly well. After brief groans of “Aw, man,” they shifted their praise for the dinner to Elaine, who accepted it graciously.
