Laughter the best medicine – The Irish View on Life.

Haha! This probably goes a long way in explaining my boyfriend’s sense of humor (he’s Irish).

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine

I have to mention that my husband is Irish and his father is one of the finest raconteurs of jokes and stories, Irish or otherwise. My own mother’s family originated from County Cork.. in Ireland, Cork men have been the butt of many a joke as have those poor souls from Kerry. The Irish have a long and revered history but they have also endured dark times. And I have little doubt that it is there wonderful sense of humour and their ability to take the mick out of themselves that make them so universally liked.

We had been married about 17 years before we returned for several years to live in Ireland. I had visited many times of course to visit my in-laws but had never been fully immersed in the culture or the sense of fun.

I remember coming out of the Shelbourne Hotel in St.Stephen’s Green in…

Liebster Award #2

Grady P. Brown did me the honor of nominating me for my second Liebster Award the other day.  Thank you so much, and sorry I’m just now getting around to doing this.

Anyway, for this award, I’m supposed to answer 11 questions, tag some people, and give them 11 questions to answer.

So, my questions to answer are:

1.) Do you enjoy anime and manga?

Yes! I’ve been into anime and manga for about 20 years, I think. Some of my current favorites include Rurouni Kenshin, Hellsing, Fullmetal Alchemist, Blue Exorcist, Sword Art Online, Fairy Tail, Detective Conan, Lupin III, Black Butler, Naruto, Yu Yu Hakusho, Gundam, and Macross.

2.) What is your favorite pet?

Cats, with dogs a close second. But I love animals in general.

3.) What country would you want to visit the most?

Ireland (to go back and see more of), the UK, and Japan.

4.) What would you describe as your favorite vacation experience?

The week I spent in Ireland as part of a study abroad group. It was my first time going to a different country. It was also a bit of a gutsy move, since I went with people I didn’t really know. And it was my first time on a plane.

5.) If you enjoy superheroes, who is your favorite one?

Hard to say. I enjoy a lot of them. But I’d say Batman, Spider-man, and Gambit, probably.

6.) What is your opinion of pit bulls?

They’re just like any other dog. It all comes down to training, I think. Train the dog right, and you won’t have so much trouble with them.

7.) What kind of music do you enjoy?

My taste is pretty eclectic. About the only type I don’t really like is rap and hip-hop. I really enjoy rock (classic, hard, metal, alternative), country, classical, big band, some jazz, and J-pop and J-rock (Japanese pop and rock).

8.) What makes you laugh the most?

watching animals play; witty humor; sarcasm. I love the Marx Brothers, for example.

9.) What is your favorite season of the year?

10.) How would you describe as the perfect villain?

Tough question. I’m not really sure. Maybe someone who is clever but a bit psychotic. Someone with a method to their madness and who can do wrong but make it seem almost an endearing quality, so that people will have a hard time condemning him. He’d also have to be able to give the hero a run for his money in some way or other.  My first thought was someone kind of like The Joker.

11.) What is your favorite dessert?

cheesecake, ice cream, or anything chocolate

My questions for the nominees:

1. What was your favorite school subject?

2. Do you enjoy video games?

3. What would you do if you won the lottery?

4. What is your favorite tv show?

5. If you could travel back in time, when would you go to?

6. What’s your favorite book from childhood?

7. Who would you cast to play you if they made a movie of your life?

8. Do you believe in ghosts?

9. What is your favorite holiday?

10. Do you consider yourself a morning person?

11. Coffee or tea?

My nominees (sorry if I nominate someone who’s done this recently or doesn’t do these things):
By Hook or By Book

Getting Away – Stream of Consciousness Saturday

So, today’s Stream of Consciouness prompt is “getting away”. What’s the first thing that comes to my mind? The Offspring’s song, Gotta Get Away  🙂

Then I think of how I got away from it all for a week when I went on a trip to Ireland about 10 years ago. I had such a good time there, and wish I could go back again. It was so beautiful there, and I wished I could have stayed longer than the week that was scheduled for the trip. I’d went as part of a study abroad trip with a group of teachers and students at the community college. Pretty bold of me, since I didn’t know anyone there, and was only familiar with the lead teacher in the group because my mother had taken a couple of her classes  a couple years earlier (and had even done a similar trip then, also).  The trip was also my first time on a plane, so I was really feeling bold then. I had decided to go to celebrate having paid off my student loan (not the community college, I wasn’t a student there, per se; I’d only been taking a class or two there for fun).

It was such a fun trip, visiting different places in southern Ireland. Dublin, the Ring of Kerry, Dingle, Kilkenny Castle, the Rock of Cashel, the Titanic museum – all of it was so much fun. And I had the best fish and chips at a riverside restaurant there.  Oh, I really wish I could go back some day and see more!

I do enjoy traveling, I just can’t really afford to do as much as I would like. If I ever win the lottery or hit it big publishing, I would go back to Ireland. I’d also like to visit England and Scotland. And I want to go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, too 🙂 Some other dream places I’d like to see would be Japan, the Pyramids, and the Winter Palace and Hermitage Museum.

Where would you like to go to get away from it all, if you could?
