When Richie picked up his phone again and looked at it for the third time in as many minutes, his friend Darryl rolled his eyes and snatched the phone away and put in the table beside his plate.

“Would you stop it already, Richie,” he chastised.

“But she might call any time,” Richie complained.

“Who?”

“Miranda. You remember. That girl from the diner the other day. We sort of hit it off, and I gave her my number.”

“Oh, yeah. Her.”

“She said she’d call.”

Darryl looked at his friend sadly.  Richie was so hopeful, he hated to burst his bubble. “Richie, that was days ago,” he said gently.

“I know,” Richie said. “But she said she’d call. She’s probably busy.” He stared hard at his phone sitting next to Darryl’s plate, as if willing it to ring.

Darryl shook his head at Richie’s determination. “Well, staring at it and checking it every minute isn’t going to make her call you any quicker, Richie, so quit it already.”

Richie sighed and looked away from his phone to pick up his sandwich and take a bite. Just as he did, his phone rang. He dropped his sandwich and snatched his phone back to answer it without looking at the caller ID.

“Hello?” he answered, and his hopeful eagerness quickly drained and he frowned as he heard the voice the responded. He listened for a minute, then snapped, “Mom, do you mind? I’m waiting for a call! I’ll call you back later!”

He hung up as Darryl laughed.

“It’s not funny, Darryl,” Richie said with scowl.

He set the phone down and picked up his sandwich again.

His phone rang again. Richie put his sandwich down and looked at the caller ID first this time before he answered.

“Hello?” he said, careful to keep his voice from sounding eager.

Darryl watched as Richie listened for a moment, and replied, “Oh, yeah. Hi, Miranda. How’s it going?”

Richie grinned at Darryl and mouthed “I told you so.”

Darryl gave a small shrug and returned to eating as Richie continued to talk on the phone.
