Inspired by the blizzard here in VA today:
Snow drifted down lightly outside as Jimmy stood in the doorway, his hand on the handle. There was already a light coating of snow on the grass and the road. “I’ll see you all later, then,” he said to his friends, Jenna and Terry.
“Be careful,” Jenna said. “This weather can be dangerous to drive in.”
“I know. I’ll be careful.”
“And give Michelle our love and tell we said congratulations.”
Jimmy started to leave, but Terry called to him, “Aren’t you forgetting something?”
“Huh?” Jimmy said, turning back. “Forget something?” His eyes widened as he saw Terry holding his coat out to him. Jimmy looked down and saw he wasn’t wearing a coat. “Oh, yeah,” he said with a laugh. He took the coat and put it on. “Thanks.”
“Are you sure you should be going alone?” Jenna said, concerned over his absentmindness. However, given the situation, his absentmindedness was understandable. “We can drive you to the hospital. We don’t mind.”
“Thanks, but I’ll be fine.”
“Are you sure?” Jenna said. “It’s really no problem.”
“I’m sure. I’ll call you later and let you know how things are.”
Jimmy’s cell phone rang again and he quickly answered it as he hurried out the door.”I’m on my way, babe, just keep breathing like we learned in class.” He forgot about the slick snow and ice beginning to coat the front steps, however, and slipped down the two steps to the sidewalk.
Jenna stared at him in surprise and called out to him to make sure he was okay while Terry just shook his head and laughed.
Jimmy picked himself up, wiped himself off, and waved to them with a wan smile as he made his way to his car as his friends watched.
“Be careful!” Jenna called to him as Terry muttered, “Couldn’t she have waited for a better day to go into labor?”
