She sat in the window, relishing the breeze blowing in through the screen and watching as birds flew by and alighted in the trees in the back yard. Her attention was caught as a squirrel began to hop across the yard, pausing now and then to nibble at the large nut it carried in its mouth. Then another bird came flying by and landed on the window sill in front of her. She instinctively reached out to try to touch it, but the window screen got in the way. Her sudden movement startled the bird, and it flew off. She watched it go, wishing she could chase after it.
A sound from the kitchen caught her ear, and she hurried off to see what it was. Through the screen of the open patio door, she saw him standing at the door, and she hurried to greet her friend Roscoe. She hadn’t seen him all day, and missed his company. She always had so much fun playing with him.
In her haste, she hadn’t noticed Melanie over by the refrigerator, and she almost ran into her as she was closing the refrigerator door and backing away.
“What the… Mitzi, you silly cat!”Melanie blurted out as she narrowly missed stepping on the gray tabby cat that ran through the kitchen.
Mitzi ignored her and ran up to the patio door, where she and Roscoe, the fluffy black cat, touched noses in greeting through the screen door.
Melanie sighed and walked up to the door. “Alright, Mitzi. You can go out and play with him for a little bit.”
She opened the patio door and let Mitzi out onto the patio. As the two cats greeted each other, Melanie also stepped out and closed the outside door on the screened-in patio so the cats could play outside safely. Then she returned to the kitchen to finish making her sandwich.
