Julia stood at the bus stop at the edge of town, a single suitcase sitting on the ground at her feet. She looked at the watch on her wrist. Just a few more minutes until the bus got there and she could finally leave this boring little town and start a new life in the big city.

A couple of minutes later, a car pulled up next to her and she frowned. She wanted to make a clean break with no regrets and didn’t want to see anyone before she left. And she certainly didn’t want to see him.

Jimmy got out and walked over to her. “What do you think you’re doing, Julia?” he asked. “When I stopped by your house earlier, your mom said you were leaving?”

“That’s right. I’m leaving. I’m tired of this dull town. I’m going to the city and make a life for myself there.”

“What’s wrong with this town? You’ve lived here all your life. Everyone here knows you and loves you. Can’t you stay and get a job here? Have a life here?”

Julia shook her head. “There’s nothing here for me, Jimmy. I have dreams, things I want to see and do, and I just can’t do them in this little town.”

“But what about me?”

“I’m sorry, Jimmy. You’re a great guy, and I do love you and wish you all the best, but I can’t stay. I have to go and spread my wings. Don’t you understand?”

In the distance, the bus could be seen heading her way.

Jimmy looked her in the eyes. “I understand.”

He got back in his car and started it up. He pulled away…and turned around and parked it on the opposite side of the road. He got out, tossed the keys away into the grass, and walked over to stand by her at the bus stop.

She looked at him in surprise. “What are you doing, Jimmy?”

“If you won’t stay, then I’m going to come with you. I love you, Julia, and wherever you go, I want to be with you.”

“Are you sure?”

He nodded, and she smiled and hugged him tightly. “Thank you,” she whispered.

The bus pulled up next to them. Jimmy retrieved her suitcase and the two got on the bus to find their future together.
